Today we discussed the second section of our reading, Part Two: The Geneology of Postmodern Theory. Students were interested in the importance of language and the relationship to linguistics and structuralism. Binary oppositions, syntagmatic and paradigmatic series, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche and the relationships of “signs” in the domain of semiology, “the death of the author”, deconstruction, feminism and meta-narratives, were some of the narratives experienced for the first time. Ideas and perspectives presented by the likes of Ferdinand de Saussure, Claude Levi-Strauss, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, Luce Irigary, Julia Kristeva, and Jean-Francois Lyotard presented us with a significant cast of “players”.
